ERNIT is an app connected to a physical piggy bank that uses light
to show your children how close they are to reaching their goals.
ERNIT is the digital piggy bank of the future. It is designed to help you teach your children how to manage and save money in a world of digital currencies. Inspired by traditional piggy banks, we created ERNIT to help parents teach their kids about money while putting a smile on their faces.
An app and a piggy bank
ERNIT consists of an app and a smart piggy bank. The app enables you and your kids to set savings goals, and allows you and others to contribute money from nearby or far away. The piggy bank provides a physical way for kids to connect with their savings. They can hear when money is added, and the light on their piggy’s snout lets them know how far along they are toward reaching their goal.
How it works
1. SET A GOAL
First, your child sets one or more goals using the ERNIT app. The goals can be set for anything large or small: a teddy bear, a bicycle, a computer game or even a gift for charity.
2. Start saving
Once the goals are set, your child’s loved ones can begin contributing to ERNIT by quickly and easily transferring money directly into the system. Both the app and the piggy bank alert your child when a contribution has been made to the savings account.
3. Celebrate savings
When your child claims the transferred funds, the app responds, and the piggy bank lights up and makes a happy sound in celebration of each step closer to the goal.
4. See the goal closing in
The string of lights around ERNIT’s snout is a regular reminder of progress – and a conversation starter. The lights go from 0 to 100 percent, and when the snout is all lit up you have reached your goal.
Teach healthy financial habits
When children begin school they learn to add numbers by converting them into apples, cars or other tangible things. Children need a connection between intangible numbers and tangible value – that is why the ERNIT app and physical piggy bank focus so much on touch, feel and sound.
When most parents of today were kids, they learned about value by putting physical coins or bills into their piggy bank. And they could empty its content in the store when they were ready to make a purchase. Today we increasingly use digital, intangible money. By 2017, the digital money paid by mobile phones alone will nearly double.
